Xidian University has a long history and a glorious tradition. The predecessor of Xidian University was the Radio School of the Central Military Committee founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi, 1931. In 1958, the school was moved from Zhangjiakou, Hebei to Xi'an, and was picked up as one of the first batch of 20 national key universities by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1959. In 1960 it changed its name to the Military Telecommunications Engineering Institute of the People's Liberation Army of China (Xi Jun Dian for short), a well-known college in China. In 1966 it was changed to the civilian organizational system and renamed the Northwest Telecommunications Engineering Institute. The name "Xidian University" was formally adopted in 1988.
